It's quite interesting to observe Thanksgiving in a country where it isn't an official holiday or event. We had a lovely day, though. I was able to attend a special Thanksgiving Day Service at St Paul's Cathedral which featured American clergy and their messages, a beautifully-voiced choir, the U.S. Ambassador and congregational hymns such as "America the Beautiful." The United States was in the celebrated by our English friends in one of their most iconic buildings and with grace and dignity. Sitting among other Americans there, I felt quite connected to my homeland and surrounded by international friends who respect our great nation, as well.
Security at the service was tight and all seemed a bit on alert, as the Paris attacks had happened so recently. It was odd to feel it necessary to select a seat with my back to a wall, not under a chandelier, and with quick outside access. It's maddening to even have to think about what a prize it would be for terrorists to create an incident in one of England's gem locations, full of Americans, no less. Thankfully, all was well.
Finding Thanksgiving dinner fixings was kind of interesting -- I've still never seen sweet potatoes that color! ;) -- but we cobbled together most ingredients and Chef Mike created a luscious feast, with yummy pies from and the good company of American friends, the Hegawalds, to share in our celebration.
How tremendously thankful we are to our Father in Heaven for all we are given. How blessed we feel.
