Coolin' our heels in Camden Town one Saturday proved to be a walk on a bit of the wilder side as we ventured into the area where punk rock first got its start. The signs above the store fronts featured giant 3-D comic-book-type mock ups of their offerings, we strolled passed the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and psychedelic clothing was a rainbow everywhere you looked!
The quieter side of the area featured actual, residential and touring canal boats and the locks (like the Panama Canal -- only much smaller) they use to raise and lower them from canal to canal. Fascinating to watch, the water rose and fell so quickly and the long, narrow boats maneuvered with ease through golden-leafed, tree-lined canals. We hopped aboard a boat and took a tour of the serene land-neighborhood areas with lovely gardens and huge homes along either side of the canal and the water-neighborhoods of moored thin boats between them.
Complete with tiny outdoor sitting areas, bar-b-ques, flowers and such, those canal boats painted quite a picture of resident life on the water. Evidently, you can also rent a canal boat and sail along any or all of Britain's 4,000 miles of canals and rivers. I'm sure they're stunning; obviously an adventure for another day -- or month!
Mouth-watering food was everywhere we looked at the little food stalls around the locks and we had a sampling of pizza, Taiwanese meat bowls, sausage and chocolate. Yes, more health food ;)
Pop-up market stalls with everything you can imagine from clothes to art rounded out the area.
Exploring around here is so fun -- and always interesting! London is like lots of smaller towns all rolled into one and each is so different from the other. Personality plus in this burg!
