NYC Ticker Tape Parade! . . . Foodie Fun . . . "Parkin' It!"
NYC Ticker Tape Parade!
Woke up to the news that it was ticker tape parade time in NYC, so off we scurried to cheer for the USA Women's Soccer Team as their World Cup victory was honored! We'd watched/followed many of the games so we'd felt much of the sports' anticipation, ups and downs and later the team's exhilaration of their win. The streets were packed -- I mean, how often is there a ticker tape parade?!? And this was the first ever such parade for a women's team!
Dashing from street to street, we found the routes blocked and frustrated fans trying to get through. We hustled up one way and then decided to go back to another street. Happily, we arrived at that spot at the very moment a kind police man opened up the barrier for a few anxious-to-see-it-all folks and we zipped up to the street just in time to see the team coming to the spot where we stood.
Up and down the route, as far as the eye could see, there were flags flying, players waving/grinning/beaming, floats cruising, bands playing and ticker-tape-like streamers and confetti floating! Everyone was cheering and taking pictures. There were probably more phones in the air that there were birds for a while. Such an exciting event to be a tiny part of witnessing. We're fans!
Foodie Fun
OK, so NYC has some of the best stuff to eat you can imagine. In fact, it's hard to get it all in in one trip! ;) Thus, a food tour was in order to sample the greatest array of options! We munched our way through LOTS of tasty items in Nolita -- Northern Little Italy area -- and even saw some unique candy being made layer after layer, then rolled and cut into various designs (like the strawberry below). We also chowed bits of these: Vietnamese sandwich, cheese and parma ham, famous chocolate croissants, pizza, gazpacho soup, cookies.
Had to include SOME of our favorite haunts in the picture, too . . . Shake Shack, the Halal Guys (lamb, chicken and rice), Dinosaur Bar-b-que, Italy (think everything Italian under one roof -- pasta, olive oil, breads, gelato, fresh fish, etc., etc.), Levain bakery (best cookies anywhere), Chelsea Market (a food extravaganza in the old Nabisco Cookie factory), Chobani yogurt parfaits, Magnolia Bakery (their banana pudding is to die for!), and olive oil/balsamic vinegar tasting. Not pictured: Pop Bar, El Vez, Eat, Sara Beths, Juniors, that great Greek restaurant I can never remember the name of, various other places pictured in other blog posts, etc., etc.). Ha! See what I mean? When's lunch?
"Parkin' It" in Central Park
Bustling city life gets you craving green space and Central Park is just perfect for that kind of respite! It's 840+ acres of trees, grass, flowers, bushes, ponds, sculptures, bridges and such. It also features things like Belvedere Castle (which is a fully functioning weather station), a carousel (built in 1871), a zoo, little remote-controlled sail boats, horse-drawn carriage rides, full-sized row boats, and an amphitheater that features Shakespeare in the Park festivals -- plus a zillion other things.
We so enjoyed strolling and exploring and plopping on a bench in the shade (it was HOT outside!) to watch the world go by for a while. Refreshing!
