Justin and Elise were able to come share some more time with us in London - Hooray! After they came off a trip to Paris, we joined up for a delightful field trip to Switzerland. Together with my Mom, we explored and experienced amazing adventures. Here are some highlights . . .
Swiss Misses and Misters!
A field trip to the exquisite country of Switzerland was a delight! We hit Interlaken, Bern and Lucerne. Of course, to keep our energy up we noshed on famous Swiss treats - fabulous chocolate and cheese fondue aplenty. Interestingly enough, the best pasta I've ever eaten (sorry, Italy!) was at Restaurant Taverne, also in the little berg of Interlaken. Of course, I'd be willing to do more taste tests to confirm that! ;) We liked it so much we ate it every day we were there.
So, INTERLAKEN, Switzerland is truly one of the most enchanting places on the planet! Nestled among the snow-kissed (and sometimes covered) Swiss Alps, the rolling green meadows dotted with wildflowers, aquamarine water and and quaint chalets are charming beyond belief. It is one of my favorite places ever!
Spectacular, jaw-dropping colors and views greeted us from the top of the Jungfrau - one of the main summits of the Bernese Alps measuring a staggering 13,642 feet. A cogwheel train carried us from the valley floor of Interlaken to the top of Europe. Truly glacial and breathtaking (and freezing! ;) ).
The Ice Palace was a fun wander, too. It's a series of ice caves that are actually beneath the glacier. Some of the walls are 10 meters thick! Incredible ice sculptures greeted us as we slipped and slid through the tunnels. Chilly fun!
Perched on the Lake is the beautiful town of LUCERN. Meandering down its landmark Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke) with it's historic water tower, we took in the intricate 17th century artwork on much of the 1300's wooden bridge's roof. Hanging baskets of beautiful flowers adorned each side of the bridge and swans serenely glided along the water's surface. Colorful rows of shops and restaurants line the waterfront. So picturesque; it all has a rather fairy tale feeling. Taking a bus tour of Old Town, we also enjoyed glimpses of timber-framed buildings, stone streets, fountains, little squares and the Lion Monument (Lowendenkmal). Hewn in a rock ledge, it honors fallen Swiss Guards during the French Revolution.

We enjoyed attending Church during our stay, and listening to the services via both headphones and a willing missionary who translated the speaker's talks into English. I love to listen to the hymns in the native language of where we are though and feel, more fully, the beautiful spirit of the people who live wherever we are. The Spirit is indeed international.
While in town we took a Swiss chocolate-making class at Schuh's shop, and dined al fresco as we watched para-gliders float to a landing in the verdant park next to us.

During our stay, we also visited Harder Kulm with it's observations decks and towers boasting stunning views of the Alps, rivers, towns, waterfalls, and sky. Strolling along Lake Brienz and wandering the delightful little town there was a treat, as was taking in the woodcarving shop and watching some of the master carvers at work. Fascinating!

Visiting Ballenberg Open-Air Museum was a walk back in time. It's full of Swiss historic homes, artifacts and artisans recreating life back in the day, complete with weaving, basket making, farming, glass blowing, rope making and pottery. Loved the time travel, including the grazing cattle, giant cowbells ringing as they moved.

In short, Switzerland Rocks!
