Recap: Excitedly, I headed home to Marietta for Christmas-time so we could celebrate the season with so much of our family!!! This year Mike, our kids and our married-in kids, grandchildren, parents, my sister and I shared a fantastic vacation holiday in Georgia. Everybody came and left on various dates but we got to spend most of almost 2 weeks together!
I left London right after Thanksgiving to be the "advance party" and get things rolling with seasonal activities until everybody arrived to help decorate the tree, bake and enjoy being together for our traditional festivities. I was so busy living it all, I didn't have time to stay current with posts while it was happening, so I'm doing a bit of catch up now.
Bulloch Hall Beauty and Feeling "Fickle"
A girl's-day-out date took us to a historic antebellum mansion in nearby Roswell. Bulloch Hall was the childhood home of President Theodore Roosevelt's mom, Martha (Mittie) Bullock Roosevelt. It is also where she married Teddy's father, Theodore Roosevelt, Sr.
Built in 1839, this Greek Revival mansion is an interesting peek into Southern life in that era and, especially as it was decked out for Christmas, just exudes southern elegance.
The period décor is lovely and we enjoyed learning more about the family, their intriguing history and the South as we toured each well-appointed parlor and bedroom, the downstairs kitchen and even the grounds and outbuildings.
Later, we ladies lunched! A favorite, The Fickle Pickle restaurant, was a great wrap-up to our delightful Southern girl's day!
College Football Fans
Boys-day-out took the guys to the College Football Hall of Fame in downtown Atlanta. The National Football Foundation launched the Hall to honor college football players and coaches. It began in 1951 in South Bend, Indiana and moved to Atlanta in 2014.
Highlights include things like displays of inductees, a wall of over 700 football helmets, interactive exhibits, a 45-yard football field for skills challenges, a place to sing along to college fight songs, and a jumbotron to catch a game. When checking in, you tell them what school you're a fan of and they link up a badge they give you with that team so that when you approach areas, it pulls up information and stats about your preferred team. Chick-fil-A lunch and Hall of Fame T-shirts rounded out the trip. The guys said they loved it (and now we girls have it on our go-to lists, as well)!
Waffle House Wonders???
Yes, wonders . . . We wonder how it truly got started that we hit one of these old-time local haunts each Christmas Eve morning. We wonder why even the new locations are already sticky. We wonder how we'll ever put away all that waffled/smothered, covered and chunked goodness, but somehow we do! ;)
Always cheery and entertaining, the staffs seem downright happy to help; this year one of the waitresses even scooped up an unsuspecting Raegan -- imagine our surprise when we looked up and she was being held by a waitress -- but it was no surprise when she was cooed over by every employee in the place. Gotta love it!
